How To Take Care of Your Tattoos

You want your tattoo to look it's best for its full life. Follow these easy steps to keep your tattoo looking as good as new.

Your tattoo should be treated as a fresh wound and handled with care. After 24 hours have passed, the protective layer can be removed. Place the dressing under warm running water and pull the dressing horizontally. The second skin protective layer may appear inky, this is just the excess ink running from your tattoo. Gently dab this excess ink away when washing. Once the dressing is off, pat dry with a clean paper towel. Once dry, apply some alcohol-free and fragrance-free moisturiser over your tattoo.

By the 2nd or 3rd day, your tattoo will have a cloudier and duller appearance as your skin begins to heal. Your tattoo will also begin to form scabs, you should try your best not to knock/remove these scabs. Gently wash your tattoo at least once a day with warm water and gently dry with a clean paper towel. Once your tattoo is dry, apply some alcohol-free and fragrance-free moisturiser.

The initial redness of your tattoo should begin to fade and more scabbing will begin to form. Avoid picking/knocking these scabs as best as possible, picking a scab off a tattoo can cause scarring. Continue washing and applying moisturiser daily.

The scabs over your tattoo will begin to harden and flake off. Do not pull or pick your scabs off, let them fall naturally. If you're experiencing itching, gently apply your alcohol-free and fragrance-free moisturiser over the tattoo. If you notice irregular swelling or redness by the end of this period, get in touch with me so I can advise further.

This is the last stage of the healing process. All prominent scabs should have fallen off/be falling off. You may also see some dry/dead skin around or on your tattoo. Again, do not pick this off. Continue applying your moisturiser daily and this will clear up. The outer layers of the skin should be healed by the 4th week. Please be mindful that the lower layers of the skin can take up to 4 months to fully heal. Even after the completed healing process, you should keep moisturising your tattoo to keep it looking as good as day 1!

If you ever need any advise during the healing process or after the healing process, I'll be happy to help. If you need advice on which products are best during the healing process, I can also point you in the right direction.
